Since Trump returned to the White House for his second term in January 2025, he has signed several executive orders targeting the LGBTQ+ community - particularly the trans community - including proclaiming the official policy of the US is that there are "only two sexes", banning transgender people from serving in the military, restricting gender-affirming healthcare for trans youngsters under the age 19 and barring trans women and girls from female sports. He has also moved to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion programmes across the government and in the military.
"I really want to share that often trans people are vilified and demonised by politicians and the media generally. We're people, Like I said, I'm your average young woman. I'm having a blast with my friends. I'm super busy with classes. We're going to football games, basketball games. I am trans, but that's not all my life is. But that also doesn't mean I'm not proud to be trans."
Since the start of 2025, many prominent big tech companies have publicly scaled back their DEI programs, in response to shifting requirements by the US government. Within days of taking office, President Trump signed an executive order prohibiting diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies within federal departments and sending a message and demanded civil investigations into companies that have such programs in place.
the former US president said institutions including law firms, universities and businesses that have changed course during the Trump administration should have stood by their convictions. Instead of bending to the administration, Obama noted that universities should say: This will hurt if we lose some grant money in the federal government, but that's what endowments are for. Let's see if we can ride this out, because what we're not going to do is compromise our basic academic independence.
