Michel Portal, a French pioneer of European modern jazz and a prolific writer of film music, has died aged 90, his agent said on Sunday. A multi-instrumentalist at home with the clarinet, saxophone, Argentine bandoneon and Hungarian taragot, Portal died on Thursday, said Marion Piras, one of his representatives. His 1965 album, Free Jazz, was considered a landmark in Europe's efforts to end American domination of the genre.
His first solo single was a cover of Elmer Bernstein's theme from The Man with the Golden Arm, and his debut solo album, Moss Side Story, was a soundtrack to a nonexistent film noir. He's gone on to compose scores for actual soundtracks, like new documentary SCALA!!!, which is about London's infamous arthouse cinema from the '70s and '80s where Adamson spent a lot of time.
Jonny Greenwood and Max Richter are among the picks for Best Original Score for a Motion Picture, recognized for the much-garlanded One Battle After Another and Hamnet, respectively. Nick Cave and the National's Bryce Dessner, meanwhile, became first-time Golden Globe nominees. The pair are up for Best Original Song for a Motion Picture for their title track to the Netflix drama Train Dreams, alongside the likes of Miley Cyrus ( Avatar: Fire and Ash)
