My dad bought his first blues album in Sweden, 1964. It was a John Lee Hooker album, and even though it was on the other side of the world in a place my dad had never been, and a place he could not relate to, the music was so powerful that it changed my dad's life and he devoted his whole life to music. When I was about seven years old, a little boy, he put a guitar in my arms and I loved the guitar.
Devo was always about humans being the one species out of touch with nature and the planet. I think you get a good representation of that idea without being shouted at in 'Hoppers,' which presents an exciting action tale about animals trying to protect their habitat from an unscrupulous developer while conveying important messages about ecological balance.
Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Michael Abels, best known for his scores for films by director Jordan Peele, will visit campus March 6-7 for two days of public events and concerts. The visit is part of the College of Arts and Sciences' Arts Unplugged series, in partnership with the Department of Music and the Barbara & Richard T. Silver Wind Symphony. Abels won the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for the opera "Omar," co-composed with Grammy-winning artist Rhiannon Giddens, and he earned Emmy and Grammy nominations for his scores for the Peele films "Get Out," "Us" and "Nope." His many concert works include the choral song cycle "At War With Ourselves" for the Kronos Quartet, and the Grammy-nominated "Isolation Variation" for violinist Hilary Hahn.
