This is the first article in a two-part Q&A series with San Francisco's major congressional candidates about foreign policy. Wiener later told reporters that he wished he'd had time to describe his more nuanced position on Isreael and Gaza: He said he opposes any sale of US offensive weapons to Israel, opposed the invasion of Gaza, finds the Netanyahu Administration terrible, and supports a two-state solution. But the picture of him refusing to take a stand will linger throughout the campaign.

Nearly half of the journalists killed globally this year were by Israeli forces in Gaza. Israel killed more journalists in 2025 than any other country, according to a report by Reporters Without Borders (RSF). Israeli forces carrying out the genocidal war in Gaza were responsible for the deaths of 29 Palestinian reporters, RSF said in its annual report published on Tuesday. It was the third year running that Israel was named the top killer of journalists by the NGO.
