2 weeks agoOpinion: A well-deserved statue for a hero rat
Magawa, a rat, was honored for detecting land mines in Cambodia, saving lives and earning a statue for his contributions.
"Magawa was one of the best rats we've ever had," said Michael Raine, a program manager in Cambodia for Apopo - a Belgium-based nonprofit that trains animals to detect land mines. "Magawa was calm and focused ... he was gentle and friendly with his handlers. He just had the perfect temperament."
Thailand announced on Monday it was suspending a peace agreement with Cambodia after two Thai soldiers on border patrol were injured in a land mine blast. "The follow-up to the joint declaration that we have been doing for about a week will stop," government spokesman Siripong Angkasakulkiat said. Border clashes between the two countries threatened to spill into an all out war in the summer, before US President Donald Trump helped broker a ceasefire that has largely held since July.
