MIKE's Young World festival returns to Brooklyn on July 11, featuring headliners Max B and MIKE, with more acts to be announced.
The rapper, known on his tax form as Charles Wingate and known by his old Harlem associates as Charley Rambo, made his name in the rap game during an all-too-brief run in the 2000s, as one of the most colorful members of Jim Jones' Byrdgang, his solo offshoot from the Diplomats (although due to his growing up with rappers Cam and Mase, Max is like honorary Dipset).
With each album serving as one big swing above home plate, Dry Cleaning use their third LP, Secret Love, to confirm they've got one of the most consistent batting averages in modern post-punk. The South London quartet allows each member to lean closer to the forefront-in turns or simultaneously-and show off their sleek form, from Florence Shaw's crisp deadpan quips in " Cruise Ship Designer" to Lewis Maynard's polished, wooden-like bass tone across " Hit My Head All Day."
Just over a month after he was released from prison following a 16-year-long stint behind bars, Max B is back with his first new full-length in four years. The rapper has surprise-released Public Domain 7: The Purge, the seventh installment of his ongoing Public Domain mixtape series. You can listen to it below. Public Domain 7: The Purge follows Max B's 2021 album Negro Spirituals.
The burnt-rubber scent of Pelle Pelle jackets in the air can mean only one thing: Max B is free. Inside of his welcome home party at Harbor, one of those Midtown Manhattan money-suck nightclubs that tries to get you and your friends to pony up your rent money on a section, I was surrounded by so many Uptown dudes draped in heavy leather that I flashed back to the black-and-red joint Max rocked in a classic interview he did with Mazi O.
