The stethoscope is a medical instrument used to listen to and amplify the internal sounds produced by the body. Physicians still use the sounds they hear through stethoscopes as initial indicators of heart or lung diseases. For example, a heart murmur or crackling lungs often signify an issue is present. Although there have been significant advances in imaging and monitoring technologies, the stethoscope remains a quick, accessible, and cost-effective tool for assessing a patient's health.

At first, cancer is a quiet disease. Inside the body, cells are aggressively multiplying out of control, changing everything. But on the outside, there's nothing special to see or feel. Not yet. For Guardant co-CEO Helmy Eltoukhy, that invisibility looked like an engineering challenge. What if cancer could be detected early - through blood tests - before you even knew it was there?

If there are fewer medical diagnostics there will be fewer medical devices and treatments. Real innovation is a function of risk and reward in a mathematical sense.
