Seven players from the Eritrean football squad that scored a historic victory in Eswatini last week have failed to return home, a source close to the team has told the BBC.

Emergency services, including a helicopter, were seen searching the area, and French maritime authorities recovered people from the water, with one person treated for hypothermia.

The order disproportionately affects immigrants of color. About 75% of children born to noncitizens are Latino, 12% are Asian American, 6% are white, and 5% are Black.

They want to self-deport: they packed their bags, bought their tickets, and showed up at the airport to leave. And yet, they couldn't board the plane.

Germany has no equivalent of the US' specialized Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, though that would change if the Bavarian branch of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) had its way. Apparently directly inspired by the actions of ICE under President Donald Trump's administration, an internal paper from the far-right party seen by the German newspaper taz this week proposed that a new authority be created within the Bavarian state police named the Asyl-, Fahndungs- und Abschiebegruppe (AFA), or the "Asylum, Tracing and Deportation group."

The cause isn't an abnormal number of deaths or a plummeting birthrate - though that's slipping too, exacerbating the trend - but instead a collapse in the rate of migration from 2.7 million people in July, 2024 down to just 1.3 million in 2025 as the White House does everything in its power to make the country hostile to immigrants.

President Donald Trump's MAGA movement suffers from an excess of morality. On no issue is that more apparent, and more self-damaging, than immigration. That claim likely would strike both the right and the left as absurd. The former sees itself as hard-nosed realists who will do whatever necessary to take back their nation. And the latter doesn't see much MAGA morality in Minneapolis, where this weekend immigration officers again shot dead a disruptive protester, the second this month.

At the same time, however, the United States is hemorrhaging billions in tourism revenue by the year, a downward trend many experts credit to President Donald Trump's nationalistic approach to immigration. In December, the administration expanded its travel ban to 39 countries-most of them in Africa-that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi L. Noem claimed had "been flooding our nation with killers, leeches, and entitlement junkies" on X.
