As an example, when looking at the Independence Pass SNOTEL site in central Colorado outside of Aspen, we typically have 13 inches of snow-water-equivalent at the end of February. This year, we only have 6.7 inches of SWE.

Ruby Hill Railyard in Denver is now open to snowboarders and skiers and features 11 rails and boxes of varying configurations and skill levels. This terrain park can be found off South Platte River Drive and West Florida Avenue in the Mile High City and is free to use. "Rubyhill railyard is now OPEN!! Crazy to think we can open with the snow drought this year! The volunteers killed it! Snowmaking went incredible! Thank you."

As we approach the midway point of January, it's evident that Colorado is behind on snowfall not just in the numbers, but in the way skiers are spending their time on the mountain. Ski patrol and mountain operations teams all over the state have had their hands full, to say the least. Opening new terrain and creating space on the mountain is directly correlated to guest experience, but more importantly, guest safety. To put it lightly, it has been a madhouse out there.

Winter Park Resort is officially opening the Mary Jane side of the ski area on Friday, January 9th, just one day before the areas' 50th anniversary birthday bash. Mary Jane became a part of Winter Park back in 1975, adding 18 new trails to the resort. For half a century the area has been home to epic mogul, tree, and bowl skiing, defining what it means to truly ski with grit. Trails like Outhouse, Super Gauge, and Trestle have cemented themselves among mogul skiing royalty.

Vail Mountain has recorded its lowest snowpack in 47 years, with just 67 inches of snow so far this season. It has been a tough season so far for many resorts located in the Rockies and out West. "We experienced one of the worst early-season snowfalls in the Western U.S. in over 30 years," Rob Katz, Chief Executive Officer, said in a press release. This has limited Vail Mountain and other resorts from opening new terrain and has decreased skier visits.

Alaska is a hot spot for grizzly bears, easily home to the most of any of the 50 states. There are an estimated 30,000 across the entire state, representing over 98 percent of the United States population. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game manages the population, ensuring that the population remains healthy and grizzly bear viewing opportunities stay abundant.
