Righty Charlie Morton was on the bump for the Tigers. He's had decidedly mixed results since the trade deadline deal that brought him to the D, including allowing 11 earned runs in his last two starts. The White Sox led off with a Mike Tauchman single to right. A liner that Colt Keith dropped initially was a prime double play candidate, but Keith misplayed it by throwing to first instead of second and the Tigers only got the batter, moving Tauchman to second.
With a month left in the season, the Toronto Blue Jays lead both the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees in the AL title race. They face the sixth-strongest remaining schedule with series' against the Milwaukee Brewers, Houston Astros, Red Sox, Yankees, Cincinnati Reds, and Kansas City Royals. Meanwhile, on the mound, Ohtani allowed a season-worst five runs. He struggled to put batters away when getting to two strikes and at times was hurt by soft contact. The Rockies took a 2-0 lead in the second inning and added onto it with three runs in the fourth. That inning also saw Ohtani get hit in the right leg by a line-drive comebacker, but he remained in the game. Ohtani threw 65 pitches and exited with the Dodgers trailing 5-0.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto didn't get out of the first inning on Monday against the Milwaukee Brewers, recording only two outs and giving up five runs (three earned) in a challenging start.
