The Metropolitan Police's covert Special Demonstration Squad spied on relatives who started a peaceful campaign called Justice for Ricky Reel in the belief he'd been murdered. David Hagen an officer known as HN81 gathered information about them and their supporters as they travelled nationwide trying to expose apparent failings in the original investigation. On one occasion, Hagen drove Mr Reel's mother Sukhdev from a McDonald's in Stratford back to the family home an address she wanted to keep private.

Only two of the men - Norris and Gary Dobson - who were involved in the racist stabbing of the 18-year-old in Eltham, south London, in April 1993 have ever been brought to justice, with four other suspects never convicted. His father Dr Neville Lawrence told BBC News: "For me to think that [Norris is] safe to be released, is for him to give the names of the people with him that night."

Jarvis McKenzie said that on 17 July, while waiting to go to work, a white man in a car picked up a rifle, fired over his head and shouted you better get running, boy!, according to the Associated Press. McKenzie reportedly escaped behind a brick wall and police later arrested Jonathan Felkel, 34, in the shooting, according to WIS 10.
