It's such an important occasion to mark. I actually umm'd and ahh'd a lot about wearing a poppy today because I find the pageantry that comes along with it sometimes a little bit nauseating. It becomes much more about a political show than it does about remembrance. The remembrance is the key thing, especially in a world where the far right is rising, racism is on the rise, xenophobia... it's really important to remember that that's what we were fighting against in World War II.

Christine Estima's first novel Letters to Kafka tells the story of unhappily married Milena Jesenska, who starts writing letters back and forth to Franz Kafka, evolving into an affair which captures them. After first learning about Jesenska, Estima felt compelled to dig into her story, learning that she was a courageous journalist, translator and resister of the Nazi regime.

This year's Remembrance Day, which is held every Nov. 11 to honour those who have served and are currently serving in the military, marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Tuesday will also mark the 100th anniversary of the Toronto Cenotaph at Old City Hall. The memorial for those who died at war has been a site of remembrance since 1925.
