A federal judge on Tuesday temporarily halted a Trump administration plan to reduce disaster relief and anti-terrorism funding for states with so-called "sanctuary" policies for undocumented immigrants. District Judge Mary S. McElroy granted the temporary restraining order curtailing the cuts at the request of California, 10 other states and the District of Columbia, which argued in a lawsuit Monday that the policy appeared to have illegally cost them hundreds of millions of dollars.

The Department of Homeland Security announced it's launching an immigration enforcement operation in Illinois in the latest escalation of federal action on U.S. cities and states led by Democrats. The agency said in a post on X that the U.S. Immigration Customs and Enforcement's "Operation Midway Blitz" is in honor of Katie Abraham, a 20-year-old woman it says was killed in January in a drunk-driving hit-and-run accident involving a man who is an undocumented immigrant in Illinois. Officials identified him as Julio Cucul-Bol.

"Silence in the face of oppression is not an option," Wu said at a press conference outside City Hall. She was joined by Sen. Ed Markey, most members of the City Council, state lawmakers, police officers, activists, union members, and leaders from nearby communities.

The U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against New York City, claiming sanctuary policies obstruct federal immigration enforcement and compromise public safety.
