Missouri State Sen. Joe Nicola (R) introduced a bill that would ban "social transition" in schools and forcibly out any transgender and nonbinary students to their potentially unsupportive parents if the students ask a school staff member to address them by a name or gender identity different from the sex assigned to them at birth. The bill would also allow teachers to be fired and banned from teaching,
In April, the U.S. Department of Education used a landmark law intended, in part, to end racial discrimination to investigate Chicago Public Schools over a "Black Students Success Plan," after a complaint that the program discriminated against students of other races. In July, the department ruled five Virginia school districts had violated another civil rights law, intended to protect women and girls from sex discrimination and harassment, by allowing transgender students to use school facilities based on gender identity, not biological sex.
The Temecula school board voted Tuesday, Aug. 26, to table a policy that would have required students to seek special accommodations if they don't want to share a locker room or restroom with transgender classmates. The board voted 4-1 to table two policies that would have set a requirement for written requests seeking mental health or religious exemptions if to avoid sharing facilities with trans students. Board President Melinda Anderson and members Emil Barham, Steven Schwartz and Jen Wiersma voted to table the policy.
