Bay Area tech company purchases LA airport ahead of World Cup and Olympics
""We want to transform the way people get around Los Angeles and leave a legacy that shapes the future of transportation in America. There's no better time to do that than during the LA28 Games," Adam Goldstein, CEO and founder of Archer Aviation, said in a news release. "I can't wait to see Midnight flying passengers over Los Angeles, emblazoned with the Team USA logo and LA28 logo.""
""serve as its operational hub for its planned LA air taxi network""
""designed to replace long, traffic-congested car trips with safe, quiet electric air taxi flights""
Archer Aviation purchased Hawthorne Municipal Airport from the city of Hawthorne for $126 million to use as an operational hub and testing site for its planned Los Angeles air taxi network. The facility will support test projects including artificial intelligence-powered aviation technology. The airport sits near major venues such as SoFi Stadium, Kia Forum and Intuit Dome, enabling convenient access for large events. Archer is the official air taxi partner for the 2026 World Cup and was selected as the air taxi provider for the 2028 Olympics. Archer's Midnight electric aircraft aim to replace long, congested car trips, but they remain in testing and lack FAA commercial approval; projected fares are $3–$4 per passenger mile.
