CMOs allocate an average of 15.3% of marketing budgets to AI initiatives, while only 30% report mature or fully developed AI readiness capabilities. Many marketers buy AI tools faster than they build governance structures, data foundations, workflows, and talent models needed to operationalize AI at scale. Although 70% of CMOs consider becoming an AI leader a critical 2026 goal, the same share says internal processes are not mature enough to implement and scale AI effectively. Organizations with mature AI readiness allocate 21.3% of marketing budgets to AI and tend to have larger marketing budgets relative to company revenue. This maturity gap creates a tension between AI ambition and operational execution.
