The City of London Corporation is investing £191 million to upgrade the Barbican Centre, which it manages, with major works on the Conservatory, brutalist foyers, and lakeside terrace. The programme will restore infrastructure, protect the Grade II-listed estate, prioritise retrofit over rebuild, and reuse materials such as Conservatory glass. Accessibility improvements include a new multi-faith room, more bathrooms, enhanced signposting, and full access to the Conservatory. The whole centre will close from June 2028 until June 2029, with the cinema on Beech Street staying open and residential estate access maintained. The London Symphony Orchestra will continue to deliver its full programme during the closure, and the centre is scheduled to reopen ahead of its 50th anniversary in 2032.
