More than 18,000 people attended the first Pismo Beach Sand Art Festival on the Central Coast. Artists from as far away as Europe created huge, intricate sand murals along the flat, sandy expanses at Pismo Beach in San Luis Obispo County. Murals appeared each afternoon and evening from Thursday through Saturday, featuring giant mandalas, animals, and optical illusions. Organizers held a workshop on Saturday to teach sand-art skills to attendees. The weather aligned perfectly, according to event organizer Emma Rhoads. Organizers are already planning next year's festival and intend to make it an annual tradition.
