Metal Detectorists Unearth Norway's Largest-Known Viking Coin Hoard
""The hoard is an absolutely spectacular discovery from the Viking Age in Norway," Svein Gullbekk stated, emphasizing the significance of the find compared to previous discoveries."
""The last time we had a discovery of a large hoard coin like this was in Trondheim in 1950, but that was more than 900 silver coins," highlighting the rarity of such finds."
Rune Sætre and Vegard Sørlie discovered 19 silver coins in Østerdalen, Norway, leading to the unearthing of 3,250 coins, the largest Viking hoard in history. The coins date from the 980s to the 1040s, primarily foreign mintages. The previous record was over 1,800 coins found in the mid-1800s. The hoard has been transferred to the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo for expert analysis. Archaeologists believe the coins were buried in a decayed pouch, spread across the field over centuries.
