David Szalay Wins Booker Prize for Flesh
"We're all acted on by life in a way we can't control."
"Back to Vienna, I guess,"
"I'll have to pay for extra luggage weight or something."
David Szalay won the Booker Prize for his sixth novel, Flesh, at the November 10 ceremony in London. Flesh follows a Hungarian man named István whose life is derailed by uncontrollable events beginning in his teenage years, including an affair that goes horribly wrong. The novel examines passivity and the experience of being acted upon by life. Szalay was previously shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2016 for All That Man Is, which won the Gordon Burn Prize. Flesh beat finalists including Kiran Desai and Susan Choi. Szalay plans to return to Vienna after the ceremony.
