2025 Red Sox in Review: Can Hunter Dobbins take the next step?
"What's important is that Dobbins was able to earn strikes with four of the five pitches. He has pitches he can throw against both sides of the plate, raising his ceiling and ability to get deep into games. The righty also didn't hand out free passes (6.6% walk rate) and kept the ball on the ground (48.4% ground ball rate)."
"Dobbins talked (potentially misinformed) shit about the Yankees, went into Yankee Stadium, and earned a win on Sunday Night Baseball. Less than a week later, he blanked the Yankees over six innings at Fenway. One of the fastest ways to earn the admiration of Red Sox fans is to publicly trash New York. Dobbins did just that and backed it up."
Hunter Dobbins debuted earlier than expected and produced promising results before injuries ended his season. He threw six pitches, with the sinker similar to his splitter and a splitter often labeled a "splinker." He earned strikes with four of five main pitches, could pitch to both sides of the plate, posted a 6.6% walk rate, and induced a 48.4% ground-ball rate. He recorded a 17.6% overall strikeout rate and only 16.1% against left-handed hitters, numbers below what a major-league starter needs over a full season. His fastball generated little swing-and-miss despite velocity and cutting action; the sweeper and slider showed situational value, while the curve and splitter produced whiffs against lefties. He needs higher strikeout rates to secure a rotation spot next season.
