Long-Awaited Section of Bushwick Inlet Park Opens
"During Hurricane Sandy, floodwaters rose up to 12 feet above sea level. Just a few days after the park opened, typical high tides had already carried sand from Motiva's miniature beach up and onto the walking path."
A newly opened 1.8-acre Motiva parcel at the northern edge of Bushwick Inlet Park has reopened public access to an inlet area. The site had been used for shipbuilding, then remained vacant since the 1960s, fenced off and overgrown with invasive plants. The city purchased the property in 2014 to complete Bushwick Inlet Park. The new design reflects the site’s tidal wetland origins, adding a winding walking path, a small beach, a kayak launch, and a wide variety of native plants, including a wildflower meadow. Raised berms and grassy hills provide natural flood protection by helping control coastal storm surge. Visitors can already see sand from the beach reach the walking path during high tides.
