"The baffling disappearance of Melodee hit the news in late October when the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office issued a press release. In it, the sheriff's office said the Lompoc girl had last been seen a year prior but wasn't reported missing until Oct. 14, when a vigilant school official noticed she hadn't checked in for her independent study program. As the investigation unfolded, detectives learned Melodee was sighted in August when she and her mother appeared at a school to enroll in independent study."
"Investigators said they've tracked Melodee and her mother on a cross-country road trip that apparently began on Oct. 7. Through surveillance footage, detectives have now mapped the route Ashlee Buzzard likely took, from California through Utah, northwest Arizona and Nevada. It was previously reported that the rented white Chevrolet Malibu traveled to Nebraska and back that weekend, and that Melodee was not seen with Ashley on her return to her home on the 500 block of Mars Avenue in Vandenberg Village on Friday, Oct. 10."
Ashlee Buzzard was arrested on suspicion of false imprisonment and remains in Santa Barbara County jail. Nine-year-old Melodee Buzzard was last seen about a year earlier and was not reported missing until Oct. 14 after a school official noticed she had not checked in for independent study. Detectives say Melodee was sighted in August when she and her mother enrolled in independent study. Investigators tracked a cross-country road trip beginning Oct. 7, mapping a route through California, Utah, northwest Arizona and Nevada. Surveillance footage showed the pair wearing various wigs. Ashlee is held on $100,000 bail; jail records list her occupation as unemployed. Officials said the false imprisonment charge is not directly related to Melodee's disappearance.
