Peel Region human trafficking service expands ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026 | CBC News
"“We’ve seen it with FIFA, Super Bowls. We find that the impact of human trafficking around these major sporting events aren’t just [in] the lead up to, but the fallout after.”"
"“nCourage brings together child welfare, community agencies and law enforcement to provide ‘wraparound supports’ for individuals experiencing or at risk of human sex trafficking.”"
"“Human trafficking is one of the most complex and urgent public safety issues that we face in our region. It is not always visible but it is happening in our communities, often targeting our most vulnerable.”"
"“Policing alone cannot solve human trafficking. Enforcement is only one part of the response.”"
Human and sex trafficking risk rises around major events, including sporting tournaments, with harm occurring both before and after such events. Peel Region is expanding the nCourage service, an integrated, trauma-informed hub that brings together child welfare, community agencies, and law enforcement. The hub provides wraparound supports for people experiencing or at risk of human sex trafficking. Peel Children’s Aid Society will lead the hub and begin prevention efforts targeting youth aged 12 to 24. Peel Regional Police note the region’s airport and major highways make it a trafficking corridor. Human trafficking often targets vulnerable youth, sometimes recruited as young as 11, and many cases go unreported. Policing alone cannot address the issue, so enforcement is paired with therapy, medical support, and survivor services.
