"In a social media post, New Democratic Party leader and Davenport Member of Provincial Parliament Marit Stiles said the Canadian Madeira Club, known as Casa da Madeira to the Portuguese community in the area, has been a gathering place for generations. My heart is with the Portuguese community in Davenport and across Toronto after the shocking attack on Casa da Madeira, she said. I know our community will rally around Casa da Madeira in the days ahead."
Toronto police responded to a fire call in the Dupont Street and Edwin Avenue area and are asking the public for help identifying an arson suspect. The suspect allegedly broke into a business, poured an accelerant inside and set it on fire before fleeing on foot. Toronto Fire Services responded to a call at 1621 Dupont St., the address of Casa da Madeira community centre, and reported no injuries; the scene was secured and investigators were on-site. Local MPPs expressed shock and solidarity with the Portuguese community. Security footage reportedly shows the break-in and ignition; investigators continue the inquiry.
