Dennis Allen's Honest Assessment: What Went Wrong in 2026, What Changes, and What is the Bears Pass Rush Plan
"“There's nothing that (Head Coach) Ben (Johnson) said in here that he and I haven't talked about,” Allen said. “We've had all these discussions, and I think when you look at things, the first thing you have to look at is, 'Okay, what could I have done better?' And then, 'What could we as a staff have done better?'”"
"“We focused so much on installing all the scheme last year, because it was brand new. We do have a high volume of things that we carry in the defense, and we focused so much on that, that we lost sight of some of the fundamentals and techniques that it takes to function to do those things,” Allen said. “I don't think we were as fundamentally sound defensively as we need to be. So, how do we have to coach it better? Well, let's minimize how much we're focused on the scheme and let's focus”"
The defensive struggles in 2025 are framed as not solely a talent issue. The coaching staff and Ben Johnson have discussed the same self-evaluation themes throughout the offseason. The focus begins with identifying what could have been done better individually and what could have been improved collectively as a staff. The diagnosis centers on prioritization during a year with a new defensive system. The staff emphasized installing a high volume of scheme elements, which reduced attention to fundamentals and techniques needed to execute those elements. The remedy involves coaching better by minimizing scheme emphasis and increasing focus on fundamentals and defensive technique.
