East Bay artists and businesses team up for a fundraiser to support immigrant services
"As the giving season begins, 2025 has proven to be a year with countless worthy causes. This week, amid the longest federal shutdown in U.S. history, 42 million people have been left without SNAP benefits, including 5.5 million in California. For a group of East Bay artists known as the No Crumbs Collective who in 2024 held a successful fundraiser for children in Gaza, choosing a cause to support in 2025 felt daunting."
""When we were looking at who we would support this year, it was honestly overwhelming. There's a lot going on and so many different people who could use the funds," said Sharmini Subramaniam, one of four core members of the No Crumbs Collective. "But, as we were trying to decide, a lot was happening politically with immigrants, and ICE. We wanted to support a local organization that was doing the work to support immigrants, and that's how we came across Centro Legal.""
The 2025 giving season arrives amid a federal shutdown that left 42 million people without SNAP benefits, including 5.5 million in California. A Bay Area arts collective called No Crumbs Collective found choosing a 2025 fundraising focus overwhelming given many urgent needs. The collective prioritized local immigrant support after political developments involving immigrants and ICE, selecting Centro Legal as a beneficiary. The four-member group previously organized creative fundraisers, including a 2024 "Puzzle for Palestine" that raised $4,000 for MECA and showcased East Bay small businesses. The group solicited community participation and received strong local interest.
