"Why are students of color under-represented in so many Advanced Placement courses in Oakland Unified, and how can those gaps be tackled? How is public transit helping - or failing - students who rely on buses to travel long distances to school and back every day?"
Twelve local high school students examined education questions through a paid reporting fellowship with The Oaklandside. The students explored how artificial intelligence is changing school-based learning and what students, teachers, and schools are doing to adapt. They investigated why students of color are under-represented in many Advanced Placement courses in Oakland Unified and identified ways to tackle those gaps. They also examined how public transit helps or fails students who rely on buses for long daily commutes. Fellows from seven Oakland public schools pitched and researched stories, conducted interviews, and learned journalism fundamentals through workshops with the news staff. A live event at The New Parkway Theater will feature student reporting and a moderated panel with OUSD leaders.
