Despite no-win season Overfelt flag football team stays enthusiastic
""We just have to learn how to finish games," he said. "We can't panic or make the mistakes that cost us in the end.""
""I love coaching," he said. "The bond the girls have, all the jokes, the way they make each other laugh - that's what makes it fun. You never know what kind of practice you're walking into.""
""It was really fun. I definitely could've played better, but as a team we were right there. Playing on the new field felt good - way better than last year.""
Overfelt High School's girls flag football team remains winless after a 0-17 season and a 0-14 start this season. The team briefly led two games but lost 13-12 and 26-18. Coach Miguel "Chief" Esparza emphasizes learning to finish games and avoiding costly mistakes. Tryouts increased to 61 players, prompting the creation of separate varsity and junior varsity rosters of 18 each to provide more playing time and faster development. Returning players stepped up as leaders to help newcomers. Players report closer scores, better communication, growing confidence, and enjoyment playing on a new $800,000 turf field.
