Help! My Kindergarten Is All In on AI.
"Earlier this year, Dugan and his wife, Rachel Pelz, learned that they could take their daughter out of AI reading (because Amira collects biometric data, kids' voices, its use requires parental consent). But the couple couldn't avoid all AI, they soon discovered. Their daughter was learning to count, in part, from a program"
Amira is an AI reading app avatar used in kindergarten classrooms to teach children to read full sentences. The program uses recordings of children’s voices to guide pronunciation and learning, and it is implemented in about 150 New York City schools since 2024. Thousands of children use AI-enabled iPad lessons during school. Some parents report frustration about increased screen time and worry that the approach limits imagination and social skill development at kindergarten age. Parents also raise concerns about the app’s ability to learn from voice recordings at scale and about biometric data collection. Families can opt out of the reading app with parental consent, but other AI tools may still appear in the classroom.
