Cop ahoy! Sailing up the Amazon to the climate summit podcast
"This week, delegations from countries from all over the world are flying into Belem, Brazil, to attend Cop30, the world's biggest climate summit. The Guardian's global environment reporter Jonathan Watts, however, had a different idea to take the slow road. Or, in fact, the slow boat a three-day journey up the Amazon, across hundreds of kilometres, to arrive in Belem just in time."
"He tells Annie Kelly about the trip, accompanied by climate scientists, indigenous leaders, musicians and even an onboard expert in dreams and the subconscious. At a Cop where the wellbeing of the rainforest promises to be at the forefront, what can be learned from the people who know the Amazon better than anyone? The journey was organised through Jon's journalistic organisation Sumauma."
Delegations from countries worldwide are flying into Belém, Brazil, to attend COP30, the world's biggest climate summit. A three-day boat journey traced a slow route up the Amazon, covering hundreds of kilometres to reach Belém just in time for the summit. The voyage included climate scientists, indigenous leaders, musicians and an onboard expert in dreams and the subconscious. Participants aimed to foreground the wellbeing of the rainforest and to learn from people with deep, lived knowledge of the Amazon. The trip was organised through the journalistic organisation Sumauma.
