Tariffs or not? How EU is dealing with US 'dealmaking'
"When the trade ministers of the so-called Group of Seven, or G7, nations met in Paris this week, they were supposed to be talking about the most pressing issues facing global trade, including critical minerals and the impact of the Iran war. Trade ministers from G7 nations met in Paris to address global trade issues, including critical minerals and the impact of the Iran war. The meeting was overshadowed by US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose a 25% tariff on imports of European vehicles. Trump justified the threat by claiming France, Germany, and Italy had not fulfilled obligations under the Turnberry Agreement. The agreement, reached at Trump’s Turnberry golf course in Scotland, set a maximum US tariff of 15% on EU goods and required the EU to eliminate tariffs on US industrial products. EU officials rejected the claim of noncompliance and said the deal must be respected. EU trade officials said they concluded both sides should honor Turnberry, with the EU reducing tariffs on US exports and the US returning to the 15% level.
