Mortal Kombat 2 Writer Reveals A Character Who Got Cut From The Script
"Screenwriter Jeremy Slater told GamesRadar that Tremor was "almost" included in the movie, with the character meant to fight Sonya Blade and ultimately meet his end. However, Slater said Tremor "just wasn't working," so he was cut in the scripting process."
""I've always liked Tremor and he's got really fun, really cool powers," Slater said. Those powers include "geokinetic" abilities that allow him to control rocks and metals. Slater said the writing team swapped out Tremor for Sindel, who is Kitana's mother."
""It was one of those smack my own forehead moments of like, Tremor wasn't working because I wasn't able to devote enough time to sort of sell him as a character," he said. "Once we swapped [Tremor] out [for] Sindel, it immediately became more visceral, and there's just more skin in the game. And Sindel's powers were so much fun that it felt like she belonged in that pit of spikes in a way that never felt right with Tremor.""
"Mortal Kombat 2 released in theaters on May 8 and earned $40 million in North America for its opening weekend. It pulled in $23 million from international markets for a global start of $63 million. The movie had a reported production budget of $80 million, before marketing expenses, so it will seemingly need to keep performing well in the coming weeks to recoup its costs."
Mortal Kombat 2 includes characters such as Johnny Cage, Kitana, Sonya Blade, and Shao Kahn, with Tremor nearly appearing. Tremor was intended to fight Sonya Blade and then be killed, but the writing process removed him because he was not working. Tremor’s geokinetic abilities, including control of rocks and metals, were considered fun, yet he was not sold convincingly enough as a character. The writing team replaced Tremor with Sindel, Kitana’s mother, after realizing Tremor was not used in an exciting enough way. The swap made the action feel more visceral and better matched Sindel’s powers to a spike-filled setting. The film opened with $63 million globally against an $80 million production budget before marketing, and it will later stream on HBO Max.
