"Hackman retired from acting around 20 years ago, and devoted his time to painting and writing novels. Many of Hackman's own artworks are also up for grabs, including still lifes and portraits, and a bronze of his wife Betsy Arakawa's head. The couple, along with one of their dogs, were found dead inside their home on 26 February. Authorities later determined that the actor, 95, died around a week after his wife, suffering from heart disease and complications from Alzheimer's."
About 400 items from Hackman's estate will be sold in a three-stage Bonhams auction, including busts by Rodin and works by Kandinksy and Matisse. The sale features three Golden Globe statues, film memorabilia, annotated scripts, posters, an easel, and Hackman's own paintings, still lifes, portraits and a bronze of his wife Betsy Arakawa's head. Prices include modest starting bids such as $10 for a dartboard and $600 for a Seiko diver's watch, while Globes are priced between $3,000–$5,000. Hackman retired roughly 20 years ago to paint and write. Authorities determined Hackman, 95, died about a week after his wife; she died of hantavirus.
