"We pride ourselves on being like the little engine that could, because it's very much in the ethos of Bay Area filmmaking, so we want to carry that torch forward,"
"It's almost like they have the spirit of indie filmmakers, but then they have the scale and the reach of big studio films,"
Kuku Studios was founded by Alex Woo, Stanley Moore, and Tim Hahn after they left Pixar. The studio earned three Emmys for its first project, Go! Go! Cory Carson, and released its first feature film, In Your Dreams, with voice acting by Simu Liu. Kuku operates with a core team of seven while expanding to about 80 contract employees during production. The studio is based in Berkeley in the old Fantasy Records building and embraces a Bay Area indie filmmaking ethos. Woo draws inspiration from American Zoetrope and producer Saul Zaentz and rejects the necessity of living in Los Angeles for a film career.
