"The Louvre curator estimated the damages to be €88million," Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said Tuesday."
"But she said the greater loss was to France's historical heritage, adding that the thieves would not pocket the full windfall if they had "the very bad idea of melting down these jewels"."
"In January, Des Cars had warned Culture Minister Rachida Dati of a "worrying level of obsolescence" at the museum, citing an urgent need for major renovations."
Jewellery stolen from the Louvre was valued at €88 million. The theft occurred during a seven-minute daylight robbery in which thieves took royal jewels and escaped on scooters, dropping a diamond-studded crown while fleeing. Four people are believed to have been involved and investigators are analysing fingerprints and video footage, including main highways out of Paris. The prosecutor said the greater loss is to France's historical heritage and warned against melting the jewels. A Court of Auditors report noted persistent delays in security upgrades and limited video coverage, and the Louvre director had warned of obsolescence and urgent renovation needs.
