"As the giving season begins, 2025 has proven to be a year with countless worthy causes. This week, amid the longest federal shutdown in U.S. history, 42 million people have been left without SNAP benefits, including 5.5 million in California. For a group of East Bay artists known as the No Crumbs Collective who in 2024 held a successful fundraiser for children in Gaza, choosing a cause to support in 2025 felt daunting."
""When we were looking at who we would support this year, it was honestly overwhelming. There's a lot going on and so many different people who could use the funds, said Sharmini Subramaniam, one of four core members of the No Crumbs Collective. But, as we were trying to decide, a lot was happening politically with immigrants, and ICE. We wanted to support a local organization that was doing the work to support immigrants, and that's how we came across Centro Legal."
As the federal shutdown left 42 million people without SNAP benefits, a No Crumbs Collective of four East Bay artists weighed charitable priorities for 2025. The collective previously produced a 1,000-piece Puzzle for Palestine fundraiser that raised $4,000 for the Middle East Children's Alliance and showcased local businesses. The group solicited submissions to feature Oakland and East Bay businesses using original photos. Members include art director Sharmini Subramaniam, photographer Melati Citrawireja, food stylist Madge Stein, and brand stylist Jenny Irene Sargent. The collective chose to support immigrant-focused work and connected with Centro Legal.
