"Ahead of its launch, Valve told The Verge that it had significant supply ready for its debut, but it didn't know exactly how much demand there would be for the controller. Clearly, there wasn't enough stock to meet demand. But at least now you're able to join the line to get one instead of hoping you'll be among the first to buy from a restock."
Valve launched a reservation system for the $99 Steam Controller after initial stock sold out quickly. Steam accounts must be in good standing and must have purchased something before April 27 to qualify. Reserving a controller holds a place in line for future restocks. When a controller becomes available, an email prompts the user to purchase. The user has 72 hours to complete the purchase before the offer moves to the next person in the queue. Valve previously prepared significant supply for the debut but could not predict demand accurately, resulting in insufficient stock. The system replaces repeated restock checking with a queued reservation process.
