"Today WhatsApp has announced that it's started supporting passkey-encrypted backups. What this means in practice is that you can use your fingerprint, face, or screen lock code to encrypt your WhatsApp chat backups, instead of having to resort to memorizing a password or a "cumbersome 64-digit encryption key", WhatsApp says. The company goes on to explain that "with just a tap or glance, the same security that protects your personal chats and calls on WhatsApp is applied to your chat backups","
"so they are always "safe, accessible, and private". The feature is expected to roll out gradually "over the coming weeks and months". Once you have it, you can go to Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup and pick the passkey option from there."
WhatsApp started supporting passkey-encrypted backups to let users secure chat backups with biometric or device screen lock credentials. Users can use fingerprint, face, or screen lock code to encrypt chat backups instead of memorizing a password or a cumbersome 64-digit encryption key. The same end-to-end security that protects personal chats and calls is applied to backups to keep them safe, accessible, and private. The feature will roll out gradually over the coming weeks and months. Once available, users can enable it via Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup and select the passkey option. This reduces friction while maintaining strong encryption for backed-up data.
