Decaying Goebbels holiday villa to host tourism DW 10/24/2025
"Last year, Berlin's Finance Ministry renewed its offer to give away a lakeside villa built for Nazi propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels. In a last attempt to avoid the demolition of the villa, which has been left unused since 2000, the state of Berlin decided to offer it as a "gift" to anyone willing to take on the hefty upkeep. Built in the National Socialist architectural style and located on Bogensee Lake in the northeast of Berlin,"
"Berlin has not relinquished ownership of the property and will continue to pay the annual management costs of around 200,000 ($233 million). According to German public broadcaster, RBB, the Wandlitz municipality had been trying for years to obtain permission to utilize the site and ultimately plans to raise funds to fully renovate the property, which will cost an estimated 300 million."
Villa Bogensee sits on a 17-hectare plot gifted in 1936 for Joseph Goebbels as a lakeside retreat. Goebbels used it to entertain Nazi leaders and for secret affairs. After Goebbels' death in 1945, the property served as a military hospital and later hosted the youth wing of the East German communist party. The villa has been unused since 2000 and faced potential demolition. The site was temporarily transferred to the municipality of Wandlitz to host guided tours and events, while Berlin retains ownership and will continue to pay annual management costs of around 200,000 ($233 million). Wandlitz plans to raise funds to fully renovate the property, estimated at 300 million.
