""Yeah, don't go into long speeches about your family and how you care about them so much in this type of movie," Lewis Tan, the actor and martial artist who played Cole, says. Despite getting demoted from protagonist to fatality victim, Tan hints that he might not be done with Mortal Kombat - even if Cole and his now-two-dimensional noggin are."
Cole Young, an MMA fighter and last descendant of Hanzo Hasashi, becomes Earthrealm’s would-be savior in Mortal Kombat II. Early in the tournament, Cole explains that risking his life is worthwhile because it protects his family. He then fights Shao Khan in his first tournament bout, but Shao Khan cheats by using an immortality amulet. Shao Khan smashes Cole’s head with a hammer and kills him by shoving his body into a vat of acid, ending with a fatality. Lewis Tan, who plays Cole, notes that long family speeches in this kind of film can signal a character’s fate, while also suggesting he may still be involved with Mortal Kombat in some way.
