Google is scrapping its dark web report feature - here's everything you need to know and some alternative options
"Google has announced plans to scrap its dark web report tool, admitting it's no longer effective. Introduced two and a half years ago, the feature was included in the Google One premium service, and opened for general access in 2024. The tool scans the dark web for breaches and notifies users if their personal information, such as email addresses, names, phone numbers, and Social Security numbers, have appeared on the dark web."
"Scans for new dark web breaches will end on January 15, with the feature - along with all data related to existing dark web reports - disappearing completely on February 16. While the monitoring feature is being scrapped, Google users won't be left completely in the dark. "We're making this change to instead focus on tools that give you more clear, actionable steps to protect your information online," it said."
Google will retire the dark web report tool after concluding it no longer provided helpful next steps for users. The feature scanned the dark web for breaches and notified users when personal information—email addresses, names, phone numbers, and Social Security numbers—appeared, and provided details on where and what type of data was found. Scans for new breaches end January 15, and the tool plus all related report data will be deleted February 16. Google recommends other protections such as Security Checkup, passkeys, authentication tools, Password Manager, Password Checkup, and Results about you. Users can delete their monitoring profile ahead of the automatic removal.
