Faustino Oro: The second-youngest chess grandmaster in history
"To become a grandmaster, a player must achieve three highly demanding results known as norms in different tournaments, measured by the average strength of their opponents, who must also come from at least three different nationalities. Oro earned his first two norms at the Prodigies and Legends tournament in Madrid last September and at the SzmetanGiardelli Masters in Buenos Aires in December. Faustino Oro earned the grandmaster title at 12 years, six months, and 26 days, making him the second-youngest grandmaster in history. He achieved the required three norms in different tournaments, with opponents whose average strength met the threshold and who came from at least three nationalities. His first two norms came from events in Madrid and Buenos Aires. The final norm was secured at the Sardinia Open in Italy. A loss to Ian Nepomniachtchi did not prevent the title because Nepomniachtchi’s very high Elo rating increased the average strength of Oro’s opponents above the required level. The title was effectively secured after eight rounds when Oro reached six points.
