" I Wish You All the Best was never intended to be a political film, beyond the fact that I, a trans woman, wrote, directed, and produced a commercial coming-of-age drama explicitly about a nonbinary teenager coming of age, which inherently is political or at least politicized,"
"My approach was grounded in celebrating queerness, not highlighting all the constraints queer people face. This still feels viable, even if the landscape has shifted,"
I Wish You All The Best marks Tommy Dorfman's feature directorial debut and centers on Ben, a non-binary teenager played by Corey Fogelmanis. After coming out, Ben is thrown out by intolerant parents and reconnects with estranged sister Hannah (Alexandra Daddario) and her husband Thomas (Cole Sprouse). Ben transfers schools, befriends a supportive art teacher Ms Lyons (Lena Dunham), and forms a connection with fellow student Nathan (Miles Gutierrez-Riley). Dorfman, a trans woman, framed the film to celebrate queerness rather than emphasize constraints even as the political climate has intensified against trans and non-binary communities.
