FaceTune says it "strongly supports the LGBTQIA+ community" amid transphobic ad debacle - LGBTQ Nation
"On May 5, some TikTok users noticed the FaceTune ad had been overlaid on a video in which a seemingly cisgender man dons a disheveled purple wig and a tiny adhesive bra. The video text states: "POV: when ur wife been torturing u for 15 years." Someone off camera says, "What should I call you now?" The shirtless person in the video then declares, while doing some form of hammering, "I'm Erica, and my pronouns are he/she. Get it right.""
"An option to download the FaceTune app then reportedly appeared at the bottom as the person recording appears on the screen using the FaceTune app and tells "Erica" he needs a "new look." TikTok users were horrified and commented to explain how harmful the ad was. "Why do straight people fetishize us so often," said one user, according to a screenshot published by Them. "An ad cloaked in transphobia...????" wrote another. Many users merely wrote, "Wtf is this.""
"FaceTune emphasized in a statement to Them that the ad was created by a third party and that it was removed as soon as the team learned about it. "Facetune strongly supports the LGBTQIA+ community. This ad was posted through a third-party ad program by a creator with no affiliation to us, it does not reflect our values, and was removed as soon as we became aware. We have since strengthened controls over third-party creator content.""
A FaceTune advertisement appeared over a TikTok video that mocked trans people. The video showed a person wearing a purple wig and a small adhesive bra while saying, “I’m Erica, and my pronouns are he/she. Get it right.” The ad overlay included an option to download FaceTune and a prompt about getting a “new look.” TikTok users reacted with anger, calling the content transphobic and harmful. FaceTune stated the ad was created by a third party through a third-party ad program, did not reflect company values, and was removed once the company became aware. The company said it strengthened controls over third-party creator content afterward.
