""It hit my heartstrings," he said."
""I was out there feeling a little alone doing same-sex marriage in 2004," Newsom recounted. "It was Rob who reached out - it's how I got to know him - saying he had my back at a time when a lot of members of my own party, the Democratic Party, didn't.""
""He's been a friend for decades," Newsom said. "So it just breaks my heart.""
California Gov. Gavin Newsom became emotional while responding to a question about director Rob Reiner's death and recalled their personal connection and Reiner's activism. Newsom said he had spoken with the Reiners a few weeks before their deaths and remembered Reiner's early public support for marriage equality. He said Reiner reached out to support Newsom's 2004 same-sex marriage efforts when many members of the Democratic Party did not, and described Reiner as a longtime friend. Newsom also announced that the state hired former CDC officials who left over the federal administration's anti-vaccine stance. The Reiners were found dead and their son has been arrested as a suspect.
