Abe Foxman, longtime director of Anti-Defamation League, dies at 86 | Fortune
"Upon his retirement, Foxman told The Associated Press that he worried that the internet was giving bigots a way to spread their beliefs "not only anonymously but at the speed of light.""
Abe Foxman, longtime national director of the Anti-Defamation League, died at age 86. He led the organization for nearly 28 years, counseling presidents, diplomats, CEOs, and celebrities. He challenged prominent figures over antisemitic remarks or portrayals and accepted apologies on behalf of the Jewish community. Born in 1940 to Polish Jewish parents in what is now Belarus, he survived the Holocaust after being baptized as a Catholic to hide his Jewish identity, then reunited with his family and moved to New York. After earning a law degree, he joined the ADL as a staff lawyer and spent his entire career there, becoming national director in 1987. He later warned that the internet lets bigots spread beliefs anonymously and rapidly.
