From fringe issue to the heart of politics: the UK Living Wage campaign marks 25 years of success | Heather Stewart
"I'd always worked in the health service. And I was always conscious of families with not enough money to live on, Harris recalls. And I was also very conscious that poverty and ill health were so linked. Methodist minister Paul Regan and senior NHS leader and Catholic activist Bernie Harris, who were both involved from the earliest days, reminisced last week about the campaign's challenges and triumphs."
The Living Wage campaign, formed from Telco in East London and later becoming Citizens UK, has worked through communities to press for social and economic change. After 25 years, it signed the Department for Business and Trade as a living wage employer. In 2012, contracted-out cleaners placed letters on senior ministers’ desks to highlight low pay while maintaining clean government offices. More than a decade later, cleaners and security guards at the department will receive at least the London living wage of £14.80 an hour. The campaign’s living wage rates are calculated annually by the Resolution Foundation, with £13.45 outside London and £14.80 in the capital.
