"It's amazing how quickly a building starts to degrade when it's not being used, says Simon Rayner, who I'm here with. He points to the peeling paint and patches of green lichen; the unkempt flower beds; the bedraggled collapsed parasols over the outdoor tables; a line of forgotten beer barrels along the garden wall, still awaiting collection."
"I used to stop and tie the horse up outside the pub, go in and get a Coca-Cola. I remember it always being very busy. That had a lot to do with the fact that, at the time, the Hare and Hounds was owned and run by legendary Liverpool winger Peter Thompson."
The Hare and Hounds is a whitewashed 17th-century stone building in Bowland Bridge near Windermere, originally a coaching inn on the Manchester to Glasgow route. Currently closed and for sale, the pub shows visible signs of neglect including peeling paint, lichen growth, and abandoned outdoor furniture. Simon Rayner, who grew up in Windermere and left for London 25 years ago, returns to the area experiencing what he describes as a 'hefting' instinct—a reference to the homing behavior of Herdwick sheep. He recalls the pub's former vibrancy when it was owned by legendary Liverpool winger Peter Thompson and was a popular stopping point during his teenage horse-riding expeditions through the region.
