Puerto Rico’s literary production is often ignored in Spain and Latin America despite its quality. Editorial policies and limited distribution keep much writing confined to the island, creating broad invisibility. Even influential works about Latin America can omit Puerto Rico entirely. Visibility has increased through contemporary cultural figures, including Bad Bunny, whose political engagement draws attention to the territory. In late April, the International Congress of Writers met in Caguas at the Fine Arts Center, continuing the legacy of earlier events disrupted by Hurricane Maria, the pandemic, and cultural budget cuts. Support from local leadership, private contributions, and Spanish institutions enabled the congress, which brought together writers from Spain and Latin America and featured 25 Puerto Rican authors, with Luis Rafael Sanchez as a central figure.
